I just heard about this group on a forum discussing another independent label, Thunderbean, where the work here was praised (by people very qualified to judge it), so I tried the Soviet Animation volume one, and wow, is it a beautiful disc. The picture is dazzling, which really matters when the visuals of a particular movie are.... let me say this: it's easier to go along with the stargate sequence in 2001 when it's sharp and colorful, because it's so busy taking your breath away, you don't get the inclination to disconnect because the visuals are .. you know, 'weird', as some might say. Instead it's just pretty, dazzling, playful or impactful. So their good work here matters.
They seem to produce their own extras, and what I saw were perfect. I didn't know the film makers, and now I do. Perfect. The style is akin to the ubiquitous YouTube videos where we have a voice and a bunch of images, except that here, what is shown matched what is being said - there is no b-roll filler. Some of what is on screen for the extras is not the greatest looking, like VHS rips or old 16mm TV scans, likely the best they could find for the related, historical elements they don't happen to be restoring, but they back up what's being said so well, and they also illustrate just how far ahead the Deaf Crocodiles have pulled the features. It's not just night-and-day. It's night seen through a rained upon screen and day.
Huge hat tip, and what a great first for me.
