I'e been watching and enjoying the movies of Aleksandr Ptushko since the RUSCICO/IMAGE DVD releases released in the first years of this century. The quality of those releases had a lot to be desired, but some of the titles that are also found here in Deaf Crocodile's roster and box, and here they soar in new Mosfilm transfers, some probably getting some additional digital restoration by the great Craig Roberts. (These titles--taken from damaged prints--suffered from mediocre transfers and almost no restoration work at all. I'm also impressed with the liner notes and extras that provide a lot more context than the RUSCICO releases did two decades ago.
I have no complaints with Deaf Crocodile's newer, fresher restorations that are a world away in their quality. My ears have been pricked up waiting for these for a very long time, so thanks go once again to Mr. Dennis Bartok and Craig Roberts, keep up the great work, a noble cause.
Until very recently, Slavic cinema has been sorely neglected on English language home video; this has been the case almost its entire duration, and the original theatrical distribution for these great films has either been poor or non-existent in North America. DF are rectifying this situation where there is significant demand just waiting to be filled. As a Czech-Slovak American these movies are a revelation and are enriching my life and informing me of my actual identity. What could be better?
